How many stages of labor are there?

There are three stages of labor, and this classification helps healthcare providers understand the progression of childbirth and the care needed at each stage.

The first stage, known as the dilation phase, entails the gradual opening of the cervix. It is divided into two phases: the latent phase, where contractions may be mild and irregular, and the active phase, characterized by stronger, more frequent contractions and more rapid dilation of the cervix.

The second stage is the expulsion phase, during which the baby is pushed through the birth canal and delivered. This stage begins once the cervix is fully dilated to 10 centimeters and ends when the baby is born.

The third stage is the placental stage, which involves the delivery of the placenta following the birth of the baby. This stage is crucial for ensuring maternal health, as the complete expulsion of the placenta reduces the risk of postpartum hemorrhage and other complications.
